What is sitemap?
A Sitemap is a file which contains the list of Url of your website. Sitemaps are created to help the search engine bot’s to index your web pages effectively.
The sitemap can be a
- XML Sitemap file
- Text file
mostly sitemap files are created in the root folder of your website.
What is the purpose sitemap files?

Sitemap files will help search engine to index your web pages easily and effectively.
Search engines like Google, Bing uses crawl bots to index your webpage content in the search engine database.
Crawl bots are just programs that are designed to collect the web pages and update it in their databases based on hundreds of criteria.
Even if you do not have a sitemap, crawl bots will collect the web page details based on the links present on your webpage. But if you specify the sitemap file, it will certainly help Search engine bots to index effectively.

Register your self with the webmasters portal, once you logged into the account you can able to find the links to submit the sitemap Url to webmaster websites.
Now, what happens when Google bot or Bing bot reaches your website?
- Crawler bot Identify the Sitemap or top-level pages of your website.
- Crawler bot look for the web page Url in the sitemap
- Crawler get the detail of the webpage and get all the links in the webpage
- Crawler repeat the process again and again
Now, let’s create a file called “sitemap.xml” and place it in the root folder of our website. Sitemap.xml will help search engine index all our web pages easily and effectively.
